State investigating 411-PAIN referral service

September 14, 2011|By Diane C. Lade, Sun Sentinel

The Florida Attorney General said Tuesday it is investigating a Fort Lauderdale-based legal and medical referral service on allegations of deceptive and misleading advertising.

The company has been the subject of complaints from 21 consumers who said the service offered to get them insurance money after an auto accident but then funneled the cash to consulting attorneys and chiropractors, according to the Attorney General's paperwork outlining the reason for the investigation. Investigations are started when regulators have seen enough evidence to suggest state laws under their jurisdiction may have been violated.

The consumers, in their complaints, allege 1-800-411-PAIN Referral Service led them to believe they were being connected with a lawyer when, in fact, the company initially set them up with a chiropractor, complaint records show.

The Attorney General's explanation of the investigation stated: Consumers said that 411-PAIN told clients they could help them get reimbursement for lost wages through the $10,000 personal injury insurance protection — PIP — coverage that all Florida drivers must carry. Instead, the consultants got paid first, leaving little or nothing for the clients
