Ask Kathryn: Should I get Stacked UM Coverage?

Dear Kathryn:  My family has four vehicles and we all have So Fake Name Insurance Company.  The agent says the way the insurance company sells auto insurance is to sell it on separate policies rather than all on one policy.  So if each vehicle is on its own policy, should we get stacked UM coverage?

Answer:  YES!  It won't cost much more to get the stacked UM coverage and in the event of an accident you'll have the amount of UM coverage you buy stacked times four vehicles.  That means if you have a $10,000 per person / $20,000 per occurrence policy that is stacked, you'll have $40,000 per person / $80,000 per occurrence in UM coverage.

True Story:  A good friend of mine who understands how UM works recently tried to "save money" because of the tight economy by switching her UM coverage from $100/300 to $10/20 and at the same time her family went from stacking to non stacking, they have three vehicles.  She was in an accident shortly after the switch.  She suffered four herniated discs in her neck and she needs spine surgery.  Before the switch, she would have had $100,000 per person x 3 = $300,000.00 available to her in UM coverage – this amount would have more than covered the cervical spine surgery.  Now, after the switch, she only has $10,000.00 available to her in UM coverage, even added to the mandatory $10,000.00 of PIP coverage, - this will not cover the surgery.  She was hit by an uninsured motorist.  Needless to say, she is not happy about her choice to save a little by decreasing her rates and by switching from stacking to non stacking.

The Takeaway:  Do Not try to save money by scrimping on your UM coverage - in the long run you will save so much more by having it.  Find another place to save money – and if you price compare – you'll find that having UM and having stacking UM doesn't really add a lot to the price of your car insurance.
